Choosing Travel Gear

Hikers and Gear

When we travel we bring more than just clothes and a toothbrush.  Certain things some people will consider absolutely necessary, while others won’t even consider it.  We included lots of different travel gear in this list to suit all traveler’s needs, therefore not all of them are necessary.  Find a nice balance between what you need and what you want.  The less stuff you bring the lighter your load will be, and the easier it will be to get around.

Luggage and Bags

Luggage should be sturdy and easy to manage.  Make sure that it has wheels, especially if you have trouble carrying heavy bags.  The luggage shouldn’t be too large, considering that most airlines have become increasingly strict about weight restrictions.  Most airlines only allow 50 lbs (23 kg) per bag.  Since a lot more airlines are charging fees for second bags, try to fit all of your belongings in one luggage, if you can.

You Carry-On is meant to carry all the things you may need in-transit or in case of an emergency.  They should be small, especially because of carry-on restrictions.  Most airlines require that your carry-on not exceed 40 lbs (18 kg).  They also shouldn’t exceed 45 linear inches (L+W+H) 14in x 9in x 22 in.

Day Bags should be small since you will be lugging them around throughout the day.

Backpacks tend to get the most wear and tear while traveling.  Perhaps it’s because we throw them around more often, or maybe because they see more adventuresome terrain, nevertheless you should invest in a quality backpack.  They come in a variety of sizes, therefore you need to figure out what size you may need and consider how much you can feasibly carry.  Don’t over do it.  No one wants an excessive amount of weight on their shoulders.

Sleeping Gear

Travel Pillows are perfect for airplanes, buses, trains, or long car rides.  Not only do they make sleeping more comfortable, they are easy on your neck as well.  Travel Rest is a unique pillow that goes over your shoulder and across your chest

Sleep Sacks and Liners are often used while traveling in order to avoid sleeping directly on hotel sheets, or in rented sleeping bags.  They are extremely helpful while traveling.  They come in a variety of materials such as cotton, polyester, fleece, and silk.  Silk is a good choice because it is lightweight and its fibers are so tight it is harder for bed bugs and other unwanted elements to enter the sack.  The one downside is that silk is often more expensive.

Books

Journals and Planners are a great way to chronicle your experience.  They are not for everyone, but for those of you who want a written memory of climbing Mt Fiji or looking down the Iguazo Falls, a journal is helpful.

Guide Books may be extra weight in your carry on, however they are often essential to the travel experience.  The right guidebook will make your trip easier and more enjoyable.  There are a variety on the market that target different audiences.  Lonely Planet is a good brand for those travelers looking to save a buck.  Travel experience books are also a great way to augment your experience.  There is nothing like an adventurous travel story to inspire your next trip.

Security and Health

Security belts, also called money belts, are used to secure money to your body.  Some people believe that security belt reduce the risk of theft.  The belts are thin and relatively small, so they won’t take up too much room if you decide to pack it.  Wearing one takes a little getting used to.  While some say these belts make them feel safe, others think that a belt is unnecessary.

Money Clips are an inexpensive way to help keep your money together.  They are small and unobtrusive, an easy step to securing your assets.

A Medical Kit has all the little things you may need in case of a small injury or sickness.  It is handy .  Most kits can include bandages and painkillers as well as safety pins, gauze, and sanitary wipes.

An Army Pocket Knife can come in handy while traveling.  They have everything from plyers to nail files.  Be careful while traveling and always remember to pack it in your checked luggage.  You will never get passed security with a pocket knife.
